boehner does not. he can't get all of his people, he will have to go farther to the left than haster would have to get the same number of votes. >> the democratic caucus is more uniform in terms of its politics. there is less separating the most conservative and liberal democrat than they were even four years ago. i think that will be a challenge. certainly the democrats if they chose to wield power in pretty much the only way they can in the minority party, to not cooperate. the number of times that kevin mccarth he to go to the minority whip to say we need 30 democrats or this many to pass the debt ceiling or these short-term appropriations bills. you know the democrats were remarkably amenable to providing cover for the republican majority. if they truly wanted to wield power they would figure out a way to get something out of that. >> i will ask one more question which goes to the same dynamic. we were talk backstage about the results and what the freshman says where the center lies in this year's

we heard a good turn from speaker boehner. we have not seen a particular plan with respect to the other issues -- the approach we believe we should take to health care and medicare is to contain cost in the overall health care system. the per-capita increase in cost in the private health care system is running higher than in the medicare system transferring costs onto individuals and not a stress the fundamental problem. move away from a fee for service system in medicare. that is the better way to go. >> the run ideas past few that have been floating around the hill raising that trigger in terms of higher taxes for those earning a million dollars a year or $500,000 per year. how will that play? how will that play in the democratic caucus? >> people will consider various options. make sure we boost job growth and make sure we put us on a path to long-term sustainable deficit reduction. the issue is what is the revenue to cut? look at the simpson-bowles plan. look at the overall framework. look at the revenue component of how t

speaker, speaker boehner actually said it well. he said the mandate from the election of last week is for us to find a way to work together on solutions to the challenges we face as a nation. i can't agree more. elections have consequences and our ability to avert the fiscal cliff in which expiring tax cuts and across the board spending cuts are on the course to derail this economy requires us to respect that directive from voters. yet once again, lines are being drawn. you just heard it. over what types of revenue will be considered or what cuts are considered too steep. i hope was not the only one astounded by the comments of the c.e.o. of the american petroleum institute who recently said, quote, the oil and gas industry will not be singled out for punitive repeat, unquote. how fascinating. perhaps i could introduce him to the federal work force, our federal employees who are so far the only group to be singled out for punitive treatment to the tune of $75 billion of deficit reduction. they understand the principle of shared sac
